It'll Probably Be Fine

N5Japanesekonbinifriendship9:13

Today's episode is "It'll Probably Be Fine."

  2. Narrator

Kayoubi no gogo, Tanaka wa egao wo kakushikiremasen deshita.

It was Tuesday afternoon, and Tanaka could barely hide the smile on her face.

  3. Tanaka

Rūkasu, kiite. Ashita no yoru, hontou ni rakugo wo yarun da. Honmono no okyakusan no mae de, ochayasan de.

Lucas, guess what. Tomorrow night I'm performing for real. Rakugo, for an actual audience, at a tea house.

  4. CultureRakugo (落語) is a traditional Japanese art of comic storytelling — one performer alone on stage, playing every character with just voice and body. It's an old style of performance, still popular today.
  5. Lucas

    Hontou ni?! Sugoi yo, Tanaka!

    Really?! That's amazing, Tanaka!

  6. Tanaka

Nannen mo hitori de renshuu shite kite... yatto.

After years of practicing alone... finally.

  7. Tanaka

Ookina gekijou janai kedo, watashi ni totte wa mou juubun ookii no.

It's not a big theater, but to me it's already huge.

  8. Lucas

    Kitto umaku iku yo.

You're going to be great, I'm sure of it.

  9. Narrator

Sono toki, Rūkasu no keitai ni tsuuchi ga todokimashita.

That's when Lucas's phone buzzed with an alert.

  10. Lucas

    Are... "Taifuu sekkin"?

    Wait... "typhoon approaching"?

  11. Vocabulary"Taifuu" (台風) is the word for "typhoon." It's going to come up a lot this episode.
  12. Tanaka

    Aa, un. Kesa mita yo.

Oh, yeah. I saw that this morning.

  13. Lucas

Sore de sonna ni ochitsuiteru no?! Kouen ga chuushi ni naru kamoshirenai noni!

And you're this calm about it?! This could ruin your show!

  14. Tanaka

Ochitsuite, Rūkasu. Kono jiki wa itsumo kou da yo.

Relax, Lucas. This time of year is just like this.

  15. Lucas

Demo... moshi chuushi ni nattara? Dare mo korarenakattara?

But... what if it gets canceled? What if nobody can make it?

  16. Tanaka

Sonna ni shinpai suru mae ni, tenki yohou wo mite miyou yo.

Let's see what the forecast says before you worry that much.

  17. Lucas

Wakatta yo... demo, chanto mite oku kara ne.

Fine... but I'm keeping an eye on this.

  18. Narrator

Soshite, futari wa chikaku no denkiyasan e mukaimashita. Soko de wa ookina terebi ga nyuusu wo nagashite imashita.

And the two of them headed to the electronics store nearby, where a big TV was playing the news.

  19. Narrator

Terebi de wa, kishou yohoushi ga Nihon no chizu wo misete imashita.

On TV, the weather announcer was showing the map of Japan.

  20. Announcer

The typhoon is expected to intensify tonight, with heavy rain starting after eight.

  21. Announcer

By tomorrow morning, the weather should clear up nicely.

  22. Grammar"Deshou" (でしょう) softens a statement into a guess or prediction — "probably," "should be." It's the classic word of Japanese weather forecasts, but it also shows up between friends, like "you must be tired" or "it should work out." It just attaches to the end of the sentence, without changing anything else.
  23. Tanaka

Hora ne? Sugu ni sugiru deshou.

    See? It'll probably pass quickly.

  24. Lucas

"Tabun"? Sore tte anmari hoshou ni nattenai yo...

"Probably"? That's not much of a guarantee...

  25. Tanaka

Tenki yohou wa itsumo sonna kanji da yo. Hyaku paasento yakusoku dekiru hito nante inai mon.

Weather forecasts are always like that. Nobody promises anything 100%.

  26. Narrator

On the map, an area of strong winds was closing in on the region.

  27. Lucas

Mite, minami no hou de wa mou ame ga futte iru yo.

Look, it's already pouring down south.

  28. Tanaka

That's normal before it gets here. Let's go get our shopping done.

  29. Narrator

Soshite, futari wa ichiban chikai konbini e mukaimashita.

And they headed off toward the nearest convenience store.

  30. Narrator

Tochuu, Rūkasu wa mada shinpai sou deshita.

On the way, Lucas still looked worried.

  31. Lucas

Tanaka, boku wa taifuu wo keiken shita koto ga nain da. Nani wo sureba ii?

Tanaka, I've never actually been through a typhoon. What should we do?

  32. Tanaka

Sonna ni muzukashikunai yo. Mazu, suujitsubun no mizu to, kusaranai tabemono.

It's not that complicated. First, water and food that won't spoil, for a few days.

  33. CultureBasic typhoon prep in Japan: water and non-perishable food for a few days, a fully charged phone, windows shut tight (or taped if any are loose), and staying away from rivers and the coast — that's where the wind and tide get most dangerous.
  34. Lucas

Mizu to tabemono da ne, wakatta.

    Water and food, got it.

  35. Tanaka

Teiden ni sonaete, keitai wo shikkari juuden shite oku no mo ii yo.

It's also good to charge your phone all the way, in case the power goes out.

  36. Vocabulary"Teiden" (停電) means "power outage" — one of the first effects of a strong typhoon, which is why everyone charges their phone ahead of time.
  37. Lucas

Keitai wa furu juuden, to. Hoka ni wa?

    Phone fully charged. What else?

  38. Tanaka

Mado wo shikkari shimete, yurui tokoro ga areba teepu de hokyou suru to ii yo.

Close the windows tight, and if any of them are loose, reinforce them with tape.

  39. Lucas

Moshi soto ni iru toki ni hajimattara?

What if I'm outside when it starts?

  40. Tanaka

Sore nara hayaku naka ni hairu no ga ichiban.

Then it's best to get inside quickly. Stay away from rivers and the coast — the wind's much more dangerous there.

  41. Lucas

Un, sore nara zenbu oboerare sou.

Okay, I think I can remember all that.

  42. Tanaka

You'll be fine. Everyone picks this up fast around here.

  43. Lucas

Setsumei shite kurete arigatou. Daibu ochitsuita yo.

Thanks for explaining. I feel a lot calmer now.

  44. Narrator

Mou itsumo yori zutto konde imashita.

And, talking like that, the two of them reached the convenience store — already much busier than usual.

  45. Yuki

    Irasshaimase! Sumimasen, batabata shitete.

Welcome! Sorry about the mess, it's a hectic day.

  46. Lucas

    Uwa, hontou ni konderu ne.

    Wow, it's really packed.

  47. Slang"Yabai" (やばい) is the casual go-to reaction for anything intense — good or bad. Plenty of people would say this exact word looking at that line.
  48. Yuki

Minna taifuu no mae ni kaidashi ni kurun da yo. Itsumo kou nano.

Everyone comes to stock up before the typhoon hits. It's always like this.

  49. CultureIt's pretty common to see Japanese convenience stores and supermarkets packed in the hours before a typhoon hits — water, batteries, and ready-made food disappear from the shelves fast.
  50. Tanaka

Eeto... mizu to, arufamai wo hitotsu, sore kara nen no tame rousoku mo.

Let's see... water, a pack of instant rice, and some candles, just in case.

  51. Yuki

Ookii denchi wa urikire nan desu kedo, chiisai no wa mada arimasu yo.

We're out of the big batteries, but I still have the small ones.

  52. Lucas

Sore de ii yo! Sore to, joubu na kasa ga areba.

That works! And a sturdy umbrella, if you have one.

  53. Yuki

Mou ippon shika nokottenai desu kedo, ganjou na yatsu desu.

Only one left, but it's a strong one.

  54. Lucas

Sore da! Sore ni suru yo.

    Perfect, I'll take that one.

  55. Tanaka

Sore to, teiden ni natte mo onaka ga sukanai you ni, okashi mo.

And some snacks, so we don't go hungry if the power goes out.

  56. Yuki

Good call. Those sell out fast on a day like this too.

  57. Yuki

Mizu to okome, denchi, kasa, sore kara okashi desu ne. Nisen yonhyaku en ni narimasu.

So that's water, rice, batteries, an umbrella, and the snacks. That'll be 2,400 yen.

  58. Tanaka

    Hai, kore de.

    Here you go.

  59. Yuki

Got it. Stay safe tonight, okay?

  60. Lucas

Yuki mo ki wo tsukete ne! Isogashii naka ganbatte.

You too, Yuki! Good luck with the rush.

  61. Yuki

Un, ganbaru yo. Tanaka mo ashita no kouen ganbatte ne!

I'll need it. Good luck with your show tomorrow, Tanaka!

  62. Tanaka

    A, oboetete kuretan da!

    Oh, you remembered!

  63. Yuki

    Mochiron. Gokinjo minna shitteru yo.

Of course, the whole neighborhood knows.

  64. Narrator

Sono yoru, Rūkasu no apaato no soto de kaze ga unari hajimemashita.

That night, the wind started howling outside Lucas's apartment.

  65. Lucas

Uwa, kore hontou ni sugoi na.

    Wow, this is really strong.

  66. Narrator

Unable to calm himself down alone, he called Tanaka.

  67. Tanaka

    Moshimoshi? Socchi wa daijoubu, Rūkasu?

Hello? Is everything okay over there, Lucas?

  68. Lucas

Detekurete yokatta. Ashita made ni wa chanto yamu deshou ka?

Glad you picked up. Do you really think it'll stop in time for tomorrow?

  69. Tanaka

Sore wo shinjiteru.

The forecast said it should weaken overnight. I'm trusting that.

  70. Narrator

Ushiro de wa, Tanaka no terebi ga, kono chiiki no densha ga nen no tame tomatte iru to iu nyuusu wo utsushite imashita.

In the background, on Tanaka's TV, the news was showing the regional train stopped as a precaution.

  71. Tanaka

Hora, densha ga mou tomatteru yo.

    Look, the train's already stopped.

  72. CultureIn Japan, trains stop preemptively once the wind crosses a certain safety threshold — it's not a malfunction, it's protocol. They start running again as soon as the wind dies back down.
  73. Lucas

    Sore tte futsuu no koto?

    Is that normal?

  74. Tanaka

Un, kaze ga aru kijun wo koeru to sugu tomaru no. Demo kekkou hayaku ugokidasu yo.

Yeah, they stop as soon as the wind passes a certain level. It's back running again pretty quickly.

  75. Lucas

Boku no hou ga Tanaka yori kinchou shiteru ki ga suru.

I think I'm more nervous than you are.

  76. Tanaka

You really want me to perform tomorrow, huh?

  77. Lucas

    Sugoku!

    So much!

  78. Tanaka

Sore nara ochitsuite. Yoi koto ni mo sukoshi gaman ga hitsuyou da yo.

Then relax. Good things take a little patience too.

  79. Lucas

    Tanaka mo tsukareteru deshou?

You must be tired too, huh?

  80. Tanaka

Chotto ne. Demo sono kachi wa aru yo. Oyasumi, Rūkasu.

A little. But it's worth it. Good night, Lucas.

  81. Narrator

Soshite, futari wa denwa wo kiri, sorezore hitori de ame no oto wo kikinagara nemuri ni tsukimashita.

And the two of them hung up, each listening to the rain alone, until sleep came.

  82. Narrator

Tsugi no hi no asa, sora wa mou sukkari harete imashita.

The next morning, the sky was already clear.

  83. Lucas

Uwa, kinou taifuu ga atta nante shinjirarenai na.

Wow, it doesn't even look like there was a typhoon yesterday.

  84. Narrator

He headed out and went to meet Tanaka, who was already waiting on the corner near the tea house.

  85. Tanaka

Hora ne? Yohou yori hayaku sugita deshou.

See? It passed faster than the forecast said.

  86. Lucas

    So the show's really happening!

  87. Tanaka

Un. Sorede, kondo wa chigau riyuu de mata kinchou shite kita.

It is. And now I'm nervous again, just for a different reason.

  88. Tanaka

This is going to be quite a night, huh?

  89. Lucas

Sore wa ii kinchou da yo. Kitto umaku iku.

That's good nervous. It's going to go great.

  90. Narrator

Sono yoru, ochayasan wa Tanaka ga omotte ita yori zutto ooku no hito de umatte imashita.

That night, the tea house was packed — way more people than Tanaka expected.

  91. Lucas

Tanaka, mite, konna ni hito ga kiteru yo!

Tanaka, look how many people showed up!

  92. Tanaka

Konna ni kuru to wa omottenakatta...

    I wasn't expecting this many...

  93. Narrator

Soshite, hajimaru chokuzen, kikioboe no aru koe ga kanojo wo yobimashita.

And right as it was about to start, a familiar voice called out to her.

  94. Sato

Tanaka! Kore wa zettai minogashitakunakattan da.

Tanaka! Wasn't going to miss this for anything.

  95. Tanaka

    Satou! Kite kuretan da!

    Sato! You came!

  96. Sato

Mae ni itta yo ne, itsuka honmono no okyakusan no mae de yaru hi ga kuru tte. Kyou wa sore ijou mitai da kedo.

I told you, way back when, that you'd have your first real audience. Looks like today you're getting a whole lot more than that.

  97. Tanaka

Sore, Satou no okage da yo.

That's thanks to you, you know.

  98. Sato

    Ganbatte oide. Yakusoku da yo?

    Go get 'em. Deal?

  99. Tanaka

    Yakusoku.

    Deal.

  100. Lucas

    Ganbatte ne!

    Good luck up there!

  101. Narrator

Soshite, man'in no kyakuseki to, tokku ni sugisatta taifuu wo se ni, Tanaka wa tsui ni butai ni agarimashita.

And with the house packed and the typhoon long gone, Tanaka finally stepped onto the stage.
