Where Does It Hurt?

N5Japanesehealthfood8:11

Today's episode is "Where Does It Hurt?"

  2. Narrador

Kyou mo, koujou de itsumodoori no ichinichi deshita.

It was just another normal day at the factory.

  3. Narrador

Demo kyou wa, Rūkasu-san no kaoiro ga yoku arimasen deshita.

Except today, Lucas wasn't looking too good.

  4. Lucas

A... onaka ga kyou hen desu...

Ugh... my stomach's been weird today.

  5. Lucas

    Tabun, tsukare dake desu.

    Must just be tired.

  6. Slang"Kao ga massao" (顔が真っ青) is how you say "white as a sheet" in Japanese — literally "the face turned blue," but it captures that same sudden, startled paleness.
  7. Sato

Rūkasu, kao ga massao da yo.

Lucas, you're white as a sheet.

  8. Lucas

Genki da yo! Chotto memai ga suru dake.

I'm great! Just a little dizzy.

  9. Sato

    Hontou ni, chotto suwarina yo.

Seriously, sit down for a bit.

  10. Lucas

    Chotto dake...

    Just a minute...

  11. Chefe

    Rūkasu. Byouin ni ikinasai.

    Lucas. Go to the hospital.

  12. Lucas

A, daijoubu desu, buchou, kore wa...

Ah, no need, boss, it's just...

  13. Chefe

Onegai janai. Sugu soko da yo, michi no mukou da.

It's not a request. It's right there, across the street.

  14. Narrador

Soushite, Rūkasu-san wa shikatanaku, byouin ni mukaimashita.

And that's how Lucas, with no other choice, headed straight to the hospital.

  15. Culture"Kurinikku" (クリニック) is the small neighborhood clinic — in Japan it's common to go there first instead of straight to a big hospital (病院, byouin), which usually requires a referral letter.
  16. Narrador

Uketsuke wa konde imashita ga, seiri sarete imashita.

The waiting room was packed, but organized.

  17. Emi

Ohayou gozaimasu! Kyou wa hajimete desu ka?

    Good morning! First time here?

  18. Lucas

    A, hai... hajimete desu.

    Ah, yes... first time.

  19. Emi

    Wakarimashita. Furunēmu o oshiete kudasai.

Got it. Can I get your full name?

  20. Lucas

    Rūkasu Shiuba desu.

    Lucas Silva.

  21. Vocabulary"Hokenshou" (保険証) is the health insurance card — always worth carrying, since a visit costs a lot more without it.
  22. Emi

Kanpeki desu. Hokenshou wa arimasu ka?

Perfect. And your health insurance card?

  23. Lucas

    A, arimasu, chotto matte kudasai...

Ah, yes, I have it, hold on...

  24. Lucas

    Kore desu!

    Here it is!

  25. Emi

Kanpeki desu. Kyou wa dou saremashita ka?

Perfect. So what brings you in today?

  26. Lucas

    Ūn... umaku setsumei dekimasen...

Hmm... I'm not sure how to explain it...

  27. Lucas

Onaka ga hen de, chotto memai mo shimasu.

My stomach feels off, and I'm a little dizzy.

  28. Emi

Wakarimashita. Achira ni osuwari kudasai, onamae o oyobi shimasu.

Got it. You can have a seat over there, I'll call your name.

  29. Lucas

    Arigatou gozaimasu... tabun.

    Thank you... I think.

  30. Narrador

Rūkasu-san wa kinchou shinagara suwari, machiaishitsu no hoka no hitotachi o mite imashita.

Lucas sat down, nervous, watching the other people in the waiting room.

  31. Narrador

Matte iru aida, Rūkasu-san wa sumaho o toridashimashita.

While he waited, Lucas pulled out his phone.

  32. Lucas

    "Onaka no migigawa itai gen'in"

"pain right side of stomach what could it be"

  33. Narrador

The screen filled up with results, and none of them were reassuring.

  34. Lucas

Mouchou?! Sore wa taihen kamo shirenai!

    Appendicitis?! That could be serious!

  35. Lucas

Shujutsu ga hitsuyou ni naru no kana...

Am I going to need surgery?

  36. Lucas

Ochitsuke, Rūkasu... netto no oogesa da yo, kitto.

Calm down, Lucas... it's probably the internet being dramatic.

  37. Narrador

Demo, kare no shinzou wa amari nattoku shite inai you deshita.

But his heart didn't seem too convinced.

  38. Mai

    Konnichiwa, Rūkasu-san! Douzo haitte kudasai.

    Hi, Lucas! Come on in.

  39. Culture"Sensei" (先生) isn't just "teacher" — in Japan it's a respectful title also used for doctors and other professionals. That's why Lucas calls Mai "sensei" all episode long, even though she isn't teaching a class. We translated it simply as "doctor," since English doesn't really have a title that carries quite the same respect and warmth as "sensei."
  40. Lucas

A, yokatta, yasashisou na sensei da... tabun.

Oh good, a nice doctor... I think.

  41. Mai

Daijoubu, totte tabetari shinai yo. Soko ni suwatte.

Relax, I don't bite. Sit down there.

  42. Mai

    Oshiete, donna shoujou?

    Tell me, what's going on?

  43. GrammarBody part + が (ga) + adjective is the standard way to describe symptoms in Japanese — the body part changes depending on where it hurts, but the structure stays the same.
  44. Lucas

Onaka ga koko, migishita ga itai desu.

My stomach hurts, right here, on the lower right side.

  45. Lucas

Sensei, kore mouchou ja nai desu ka? Shirabetan desu kedo...

Doctor, could this be appendicitis? I looked it up and...

  46. Vocabulary"Mouchou" (盲腸) is the everyday word people use for appendicitis — the official medical term is different (虫垂炎, chuusuien), but everyone just says this one in daily life, kind of like how we might casually say "is it my appendix?"
  47. Mai

    Ochitsuite, ochitsuite. Mazu misete ne.

Calm down, calm down. Let me take a look first.

  48. Narrador

Mai-sensei wa Rūkasu-san no onaka o karuku sawatte, ikutsuka shitsumon o shimashita.

Dr. Mai gently pressed on Lucas's stomach, asking a few questions.

  49. Mai

Osu to itai? Soretomo hanasu to itai?

Does it hurt more when I press, or when I let go?

  50. Lucas

    Ataa! Chotto ryouhou tomo...

    Ow! Kind of both...

  51. Mai

Zutto itai? Soretomo itaku nattari naottari?

Does it hurt all the time, or does it come and go?

  52. GrammarSame structure again — body part/symptom + が (ga) with an adjective — now describing intensity and frequency, not just where it hurts.
  53. Lucas

Itaku nattari naottari desu. Tokidoki, zenzen itakunaku narimasu.

It comes and goes. Sometimes it disappears completely.

  54. Mai

Wakarimashita. Suimin to shokuseikatsu wa dou?

I see. And how's your sleep and your diet?

  55. Lucas

Gojikan gurai netemasu... shigotochuu ni, sugoku hayaku tabemasu.

I sleep about five hours... and I eat really fast, in the middle of work.

  56. Mai

    Hayai tte, tatoeba donna kanji?

    Fast like what, for example?

  57. Culture"Makudonarudo," "Sutābakkusu," and "Misutā Dōnatsu" (マクドナルド、スターバックス、ミスタードーナツ — McDonald's, Starbucks, and Mister Donut) are a normal part of daily life in any Japanese city — fast, cheap, and always nearby, which makes it easy to fall into a pattern like Lucas's.
  58. Lucas

Ah, today it was McDonald's in the morning, Starbucks in the afternoon, and yesterday it was Mister Donut for dessert.

  59. Mai

    Wakarimashita.

    I see.

  60. Mai

Yoshi, mou daitai wakatta ki ga shimasu.

Okay, I think I have a pretty good idea now.

  61. Mai

Ii nyūsu da yo, Rūkasu. Mouchou ja nai.

Good news, Lucas. It's not appendicitis.

  62. Lucas

    Hontou ni?! Aa, yokatta...

    Really?! Oh, thank goodness...

  63. Vocabulary"Onara" (おなら) is the common, casual way to say "gas" in Japanese — like our word "fart," but without being a heavy swear word.
  64. Mai

Hontou. Kono yousu da to, tabun onara to shokuseikatsu no midare dake da to omou.

Really. Based on what I'm seeing, it's probably just gas and an unbalanced diet.

  65. Lucas

    Onara? Sore dake?

    Gas? That's it?

  66. Mai

Sore dake. Demo, karada ga motto baransu o motometeru yo.

That's it. But your body's asking for a bit more balance.

  67. Lucas

A... shujutsu no koto made shirabechaimashita.

Oh... I even looked up surgery and everything.

  68. Mai

    Gakkari sasete gomen ne!

    Sorry to disappoint you!

  69. Vocabulary"Tabesugi" (食べ過ぎ) means "eating too much" — a word used all the time in Japanese to talk about overdoing it with food.
  70. Mai

Kudamono mo yasai mo sukoshi.

You don't need to cut everything out, just watch the overeating. A little fruit, a little veggies.

  71. Lucas

    Baransu, ka...

    Balance, huh...

  72. Mai

Sou. Dotchi no hou ni mo oogesa ni naranaide ne.

Right. Don't overdo it in either direction.

  73. Lucas

    Wakarimashita, yatte mimasu.

    Got it, I'll try.

  74. Mai

Yoshi. Nanika attara, mata kite ne.

Good. If anything comes up, come back and see me.

  75. Narrador

Lucas left the hospital feeling a lot better.

  76. Lucas

Baransu ka... igai to nattoku dekiru na.

Balance, huh... that actually makes sense.

  77. Lucas

Te koto wa, kinou no Misutā Dōnatsu wa zenzen yokunakatta tte koto ka...

So I guess that Mister Donut yesterday didn't help at all...

  78. Narrador

Konbini no mae o toorikakari, tachidomatte, tana no yuuwaku o mitsumemashita...

He passed by the convenience store, stopped, and stared at the temptations on the shelf...

  79. Lucas

Kyou wa yametoku. Ashita wa, dou ka na.

    Not today. Maybe tomorrow.

  80. Narrador

Kare wa arukitsuzuke, motto chanto tabeyou to jibun ni yakusoku shimashita.

He kept walking, promising himself he'd eat better.

  81. Narrador

Suujitsugo, Rūkasu-san wa byouin no chikaku no fasutofūdo-ten no mae o toorimashita.

A few days later, Lucas walked past a fast food place near the hospital.

  82. Lucas

Are... ano hito, sensei ja nai?

    Wait... isn't that the doctor?

  83. Narrador

There was Dr. Mai, sitting alone, with a tray piled high.

  84. Lucas

    Mai-sensei?!

    Dr. Mai?!

  85. Mai

    A... Rūkasu-san! Doumo!

    Oh... Lucas! Hi!

  86. Lucas

    That's not... balance, is it?

  87. Mai

That's... today was a rough day.

  88. Lucas

"Zenbu yameru hitsuyou wa nai" tte, sensei ga ittan desu yo!

"You don't need to cut everything out" — you said that yourself!

  89. Mai

    Wakatteru, wakatteru...

    I know, I know...

  90. Mai

Watashi ga iu toori ni shite, suru toori ni shinaide ne?

Do as I say, not as I do, okay?

  91. Lucas

    Suwattemo ii desu ka?

    Can I sit down?

  92. Mai

    Mochiron, kotchi ni suwatte!

Of course, sit here with me!

  93. Lucas

Jaa, kyou wa reigai tte koto de?

So today counts as an exception?

  94. Mai

    Kyou dake ne.

    Just today.

  95. Lucas

    Ashita wa?

    And tomorrow?

  96. Mai

Ashita wa sarada o taberu. Yakusoku suru.

    Tomorrow I'm having a salad. I promise.

  97. Lucas

    Jaa, watashi mo minaraimasu.

Well then, I'll follow your example too.

  98. Mai

    Yakusoku da yo?

    It's a promise, okay?

  99. Slang"Yakusoku da yo" (約束だよ) is how you seal a promise or agreement between friends in Japanese — literally "it's a promise," but the tone here is light, not formal.
  100. Lucas

    Yakusoku da yo!

    It's a promise!

  101. Narrador

The two of them sat there, laughing, eating fries without any guilt — just this once.

  102. Narrador

Kekkyoku, baransu to wa, kesshite warui mono o tabenai koto ja nai.

In the end, balance isn't about never eating junk food.

  103. Narrador

Itsu tomeru ka o shitte iru koto desu.

It's about knowing when to stop.
