Let's Go to the Supermarket!

N5Japaneseshoppingfood8:03

Today's episode is "Let's Go to the Supermarket!"

  2. Narrator

Doyoubi no asa, kaimono no hi deshita.

It was Saturday morning — grocery day.

  3. Kenta

Obaachan, kyou wa doushitemo miso onigiri ga tabetai!

Grandma, today I really want a miso onigiri!

  4. Fujiko

Miso onigiri... that's a hard one to find around here.

  5. Kenta

Sou nan da yo ne. Omise ni utte nain da.

I know. The store doesn't sell that kind.

  6. Fujiko

    Makasete.

    Leave it to me.

  7. Kenta

    "Makasete" tte dou iu koto?

What do you mean, "leave it to me"?

  8. Fujiko

    Sono uchi wakaru yo.

    You'll see.

  9. Narrator

Soushite futari wa shuppatsu shimashita — Kenta wa obaachan ga mou subete tehai shite ita nante, shiru yoshi mo arimasen deshita.

And off they went — Kenta with no idea his grandma already had it all arranged.

  10. Kenta

Demo, ano miso onigiri tte hontou ni mitsukaranain da naa...

But that kind of onigiri is so hard to find...

  11. Fujiko

Daijoubu, kyou wa itsumo to chigau kara.

Trust me, today's going to be different.

  12. Narrator

The moment they walked in, Kenta already knew where to go.

  13. Kenta

    Obaachan, kore mite!

    Grandma, look at this one!

  14. Grammarだめ (dame) is a short, everyday way to turn down a request — more casual than a fully spelled-out "no," but not rude at all between family.
  15. Fujiko

    Kyou wa dame yo, Kenta.

    Not today, Kenta.

  16. Kenta

    Nande?

    Why not?

  17. Fujiko

Ie ni mou okashi ga aru kara yo.

Because we already have candy at home.

  18. Kenta

    Jaa, kore wa?

    What about this one, then?

  19. Fujiko

    Sore mo dame.

    Not that one either.

  20. Kenta

Kyou wa okashi, zenzen dame na no?

    No candy at all today?

  21. Fujiko

    Ima wa dame.

    No candy right now.

  22. Kenta

    Haai...

    Fine...

  23. Narrator

Yasai uriba de, obaachan wa yukkuri risuto o susumete ikimashita.

In the produce aisle, Fujiko worked through her list at an easy pace.

  24. Grammar二つ (futatsu), 三つ (mittsu) — the generic counter for objects in general. Fruits and vegetables get away with this all-purpose counter, but some items have their own — which trips up even learners who've been at this a while.
  25. Fujiko

    Tamanegi, futatsu...

    We need two onions...

  26. Kenta

    Tamanegi futatsu, ryoukai!

    Two onions, got it!

  27. Fujiko

Sorekara, ringo o mittsu, akakute kirei na no.

And three apples, nice and red.

  28. Kenta

    Ichi, ni, san!

    One, two, three!

  29. Fujiko

Sou, sore de ii yo. Sorekara okome mo hitofukuro.

That's right. And a bag of rice.

  30. Kenta

    Obaachan, kore ookisugiru yo.

    This one's too big, grandma.

  31. Fujiko

Jaa, tonari ni aru chiisai no ni shite.

Then grab the smaller one, right next to it.

  32. Kenta

    Ryoukai!

    Got it!

  33. Fujiko

Good. I think that covers dinner tonight.

  34. Narrator

Saigo ni yotta no wa, oniku to osakana no kōnā deshita.

Their last stop was the meat and fish counter.

  35. Nao

    Konnichiwa! Nani ni nasaimasu ka?

Good afternoon! What can I get you?

  36. Fujiko

Konnichiwa. Butaniku no usugiri o onegai shimasu.

Good afternoon. I'd like some sliced pork, please.

  37. Grammar~くらい (kurai) softens a number into an approximation — "about/around" that amount. "三百グラムくらい" (sanbyaku guramu kurai) is "about three hundred grams," leaving a little wiggle room instead of demanding an exact number.
  38. Nao

Kashikomarimashita! Nan guramu ni shimashou ka?

Sure thing! How many grams would you like?

  39. Fujiko

Sanbyaku guramu kurai de onegai dekimasu ka?

About three hundred grams, if that's alright.

  40. Grammar100gで200円 (hyaku guramu de nihyaku en) — here で marks the unit the price is measured in: "for every 100g, 200 yen." It's the same で in 3個で500円 (three for 500 yen) — price per amount, not per single item.
  41. Nao

Let's see... a hundred grams runs two hundred yen.

  42. Nao

So three hundred grams comes to six hundred yen.

  43. Fujiko

Ūn, sukoshi herasemasu ka? Nihyaku gojuu guramu kurai de.

Hmm, could you make it a bit less? Maybe two hundred fifty.

  44. Nao

Daijoubu desu yo! Sore da to gohyaku en ni narimasu.

No problem! That'll be five hundred yen, then.

  45. Vocabularyおまけ (omake) — that little freebie or sample a shop throws in, no charge, just a friendly gesture. Very common at neighborhood counters.
  46. Fujiko

    Sore de kekkou desu.

    Perfect, that works.

  47. Nao

Kimi wa, otetsudai-san, hitokire tameshite miru?

And you, little helper — want to try a slice?

  48. Kenta

    Ii no?!

    Can I?!

  49. Nao

    Chiisai no dake ne!

    Just a small piece, okay?

  50. Kenta

    Sugoku oishii!

    That's so good!

  51. Nao

Dekimashita! Hoka ni nanika arimasu ka?

    All set! Anything else?

  52. Fujiko

Kyou wa kore de zenbu desu, arigatou gozaimasu.

That's everything for today, thank you.

  53. Nao

Douzo. Yoi shuumatsu o, ofutari tomo!

Here you go. Have a great weekend, you two!

  54. Narrator

On the way to the front, Kenta tried his luck again.

  55. Slangこれだけちょうだいよ (kore dake choudai yo) — だけ ("just/only") narrows it down to this one thing, and ちょうだいよ is the whiny, casual "gimme" a kid uses instead of the more polite ください. Together, it's exactly this "just gimme this one" bargaining move.
  56. Kenta

    Obaachan, kono kuruma mite!

    Grandma, look at this car!

  57. Fujiko

    Dame yo, Kenta.

    No, Kenta.

  58. Kenta

Kore dake choudai yo. Sugoku chiisai shi.

Just this one? It's really tiny.

  59. Fujiko

Omocha ni "chiisai" nante nai no.

There's no such thing as "tiny" when it comes to toys.

  60. Kenta

Ii ko ni suru tte yakusoku shitara?

What if I promise to behave?

  61. Fujiko

Sore demo dame. Kyou wa dame.

    Not even then. Not today.

  62. Kenta

Haai... kyou wa nani mo umaku ikanai naa.

Fine... nothing's going my way today.

  63. Fujiko

Daijoubu, kitto yokatta tte omou kara.

Trust me, it'll be worth it.

  64. Cultureレジ袋 (rejibukuro) — since 2020, plastic bags have been charged separately at most Japanese supermarkets, which is why cashiers always ask before bagging.
  65. Kenta

Yokatta tte, dou iu fuu ni?

    Worth it how?

  66. Narrator

Reji no retsu de wa, itsumo no shitsumon ga hitotsu matte imashita.

In the checkout line, there was just one routine question left.

  67. Cashier

Fukuro wa goriyou ni narimasu ka?

    Do you need a bag?

  68. Fujiko

    Hai, hitotsu onegai shimasu.

    Yes, one, please.

  69. Cashier

Oshiharai wa kaado desu ka, genkin desu ka?

    Card or cash?

  70. Fujiko

    Kaado de onegai shimasu.

    Card, please.

  71. Cashier

Okaikei, nisen hyaku en ni narimasu.

All set. That'll be two thousand one hundred yen.

  72. Vocabulary僕 (boku) is how boys and men often say "I" in casual speech — softer and more common among kids than 俺 (ore), and different from the neutral 私 (watashi) used by everyone else. That's why Kenta says "僕" instead of "私."
  73. Fujiko

    Hai, douzo.

    Here you go.

  74. Cashier

    Arigatou gozaimashita! Yoi shuumatsu o.

Thank you! Have a great weekend.

  75. Kenta

Kore wa boku ga motsu yo, obaachan!

    I've got this one, grandma!

  76. Narrator

Kaerimichi, Kenta wa mada mitsukaranakatta onigiri no koto o kangaete imashita.

On the walk home, Kenta was still thinking about the onigiri he never found.

  77. Kenta

Kekkyoku, kyou mo miso onigiri wa nashi ka...

    So, no miso onigiri today...

  78. Fujiko

Sou to wa itte nai yo.

    I never said that.

  79. Kenta

    Dou iu koto?

    What do you mean?

  80. Fujiko

Kotchi no michi ni ikou — konbini no mae o tooru kara.

Let's go this way — it passes by the konbini.

  81. Kenta

    Soko ni aru ka na?

    You think they'll have it?

  82. Culture-くん (-kun) is a name suffix used for boys and younger men, casual and affectionate — that's why Yuki calls Kenta "Kenta-kun." -さん (-san) stays the neutral, polite default for basically everyone else, which is why the adults address each other that way throughout the episode.
  83. Fujiko

    Saa, dou ka na.

    We'll see.

  84. Narrator

Konbini ni haitta shunkan, dareka ga mou futari o matte imashita.

The moment they stepped into the konbini, someone was already waiting for them.

  85. Yuki

    Fujiko-san! Kenta-kun! Choudo ii taimingu!

    Fujiko-san! Kenta-kun! Perfect timing!

  86. Fujiko

    Keikaku doori ne.

    Just as we planned.

  87. Kenta

    Keikaku? Nan no keikaku?

    Planned? Planned what?

  88. Yuki

    Kore, Kenta-kun ni.

    This is for you, Kenta-kun.

  89. Cultureお返し (okaeshi) — the custom of returning a gift or a favor you've received. It doesn't have to be expensive, just matched to the size of the gesture — exactly what Yuki's doing here.
  90. Kenta

    Onigiri da! E... moshikashite miso?!

An onigiri! Wait... is it miso?!

  91. Yuki

    Kesa tsukutta bakari da yo.

    Made it fresh this morning.

  92. Kenta

Doushite boku no sukina yatsu tte shitteta no?!

How did you know it was my favorite?!

  93. Yuki

Obaachan ga oshiete kureta no. Sore ni, mada okaeshi shitenakatta kara.

Your grandma told me. And I still owed you two one.

  94. Fujiko

Kono mae moratta sakuramochi no orei ga shitakatta n datte.

She wanted to thank you for that sakura mochi you gave her the other day.

  95. Yuki

It was one of the best sweets I've ever had. This is just a "thank you" in onigiri form.

  96. Kenta

THAT explains everything! No wonder grandma was so smiley today!

  97. Cultureソフトクリーム (sofuto kuriimu) — konbini soft serve is practically its own category in Japan. Some stores get lines just for it, and every chain insists theirs is the best.
  98. Fujiko

    Yokatta tte itta deshou.

I told you it'd be worth it.

  99. Kenta

    Hontou ni yokatta!

    It was SO worth it!

  100. Kenta

Grandma... since today's a lucky day...

  101. Fujiko

    N? Kondo wa nani?

Hm? What do you want now?

  102. Kenta

Asoko no sofuto kuriimu! Yuumei de, minna hanashiteru yatsu!

That soft serve over there! It's famous, everyone talks about it!

  103. Fujiko

    ...Kyou dake da kara ne?

    ...Just this once, okay?

  104. Kenta

    Yatta! Arigatou, obaachan!

    Yes! Thank you, grandma!

  105. Yuki

Kekkyoku, kyou wa dare mo amai mono kara nigerarenakatta ne.

    Guess nobody's escaping sweets today.

  106. Narrator

Koushite, "dame" darake no ichinichi wa, miso onigiri to muryou no sofuto kuriimu de shimekukurareta no deshita.

And that's how a day full of "no" ended with a miso onigiri and a free scoop of ice cream.
