Did You Feel That?

N5Japaneseroutinefriendship8:20

Today's episode is "Did You Feel That?"

  2. Narrator

Getsuyoubi no asa, Rūkasu wa itsumo doori shigoto ni kimashita.

It was Monday morning, and Lucas got to work like always.

  3. Lucas

Ohayou, Satou! Shuumatsu wa dou datta?

Morning, Sato! So, how was your weekend?

  4. Sato

    Ohayou... shuumatsu, anmari nemurenakattan da.

Morning... I barely slept this weekend.

  5. Lucas

    Nemurenakatta no? Doushite?

    Didn't sleep well? Why not?

  6. Grammar"Deshita" (でした) is the polite past of "to be" — you attach it to a noun or noun phrase to say something was the case, like "tsuyoi jishin deshita" (it was a strong earthquake). It's the form Sato leans on all episode long to tell what happened.
  7. Sato

Doyoubi no yoru, jishin ga arimashita. Kekkou tsuyoi jishin deshita.

There was an earthquake Saturday night. It was pretty strong.

  8. Lucas

E, hontou ni? Boku wa nani mo kanjinakatta yo.

    Really? I didn't feel a thing.

  9. Sato

Hontou ni nani mo? Kocchi wa shinzou ga dokidoki datta yo.

Nothing at all? Over here my heart was pounding.

  10. Lucas

Yonaka ni araamu ga natta no wa oboeteru. Demo, nani mo wakaranakute, mata nechatta.

I just remember an alarm going off in the middle of the night. I didn't understand any of it and went back to sleep.

  11. Sato

Anna araamu ga natteru noni, mata neta no?

You went back to sleep with an alarm like that going off?

  12. Lucas

Nemukatta shi, yure mo kanjinakatta kara, nan demo nai to omottan da.

I was sleepy, I didn't feel anything shaking, so I figured it was nothing.

  13. Sato

Kocchi wa zenzen chigatta yo. Sugoi yoru datta.

Yeah well, here it was totally different. It was quite a night.

  14. Lucas

Kikasete yo! Nani ga atta no?

    Tell me! What happened?

  15. Sato

    Saisho kara hanasu ne.

I'll tell you how it went, from the start.

  16. Narrator

Soshite Satou no hanashi wa, doyoubi no yoru ni modorimashita.

And Sato went back in time to Saturday night.

  17. Narrator

Doyoubi no yoru, Satou wa daidokoro de totemo ki wo tsukau sagyou ni shuuchuu shite imashita.

On Saturday night, Sato was in the kitchen, focused on something that needed a lot of care.

  18. Sato

Just a few more minutes... I can't let this go wrong now.

  19. Narrator

Sono toki, ie ga yure hajimemashita.

That's when the house started shaking.

  20. Vocabulary"Jishin" (地震) is the word for "earthquake." Worth memorizing — it comes up a lot from here on.
  21. Sato

    E!? Kore wa jishin da!

    What?! This is an earthquake!

  22. Sato

    Mazu, hi da!

    First, the fire!

  23. Culture"Hi wo kesu" (火を消す, "putting out the fire") is the first reflex taught from childhood in Japan for anyone who feels a tremor near the stove — turn off the fire before anything else, so it doesn't start something worse.
  24. Narrator

Yoku kangaeru ma mo naku, sugu ni konro no hi wo keshimashita.

Without even thinking twice, he switched off the stove right away.

  25. Sato

    Michiko! Daijoubu?!

    Michiko! Are you okay?!

  26. Narrator

Shinzou wo dokidoki sasenagara, ribingu e hashirimashita.

He ran to the living room, his heart racing.

  27. Narrator

Tochuu, fuan sou ni kicchin no dai wo chiratto mimashita.

On the way, he still shot a quick, anxious glance at the counter.

  28. Sato

Dame dame dame... ima dame ni nattara komaru...

No, no, no... it can't go bad now...

  29. Narrator

Ie wa suubyou yure tsuzukemashita ga, motto nagaku kanjimashita.

The house kept shaking for a few seconds that felt a lot longer.

  30. Sato

    Daijoubu, daijoubu...

    It'll pass, it'll pass...

  31. Narrator

Soshite, sukoshizutsu yure ga yowaku natte, kanzen ni tomarimashita.

And little by little, the shaking eased off, until it stopped completely.

  32. Sato

    Mou tomatta kana...

    I think it stopped...

  33. Narrator

Shinzou ga mada dokidoki shita mama, ribingu e mukaimashita.

And he headed to the living room, his heart still racing.

  34. Vocabulary"Daijoubu" (大丈夫) means "okay" or "alright" — the first thing everyone asks after a scare like this.
  35. Michiko

Watashi wa daijoubu yo, Satou. Anata wa? Kega shinakatta?

I'm fine, Sato. What about you, are you hurt?

  36. Sato

Daijoubu da to omou. Demo, ima no wa tsuyokatta ne!

I think I'm okay. But that was strong!

  37. Culture"Shindo" (震度) is Japan's scale for how strongly a quake was felt at a given spot, from 0 to 7. It's different from magnitude: magnitude measures the quake's power at its source, while shindo measures how much it was actually felt right there.
  38. Michiko

Shindo yon datta dake yo. Motto hidoi no mo keiken shita koto aru kara.

That was just a shindo 4. I've been through way worse than this.

  39. Sato

Doushite sonna ni ochitsuite irareru no?

How are you so calm at a time like this?

  40. Michiko

Jukkaime no jishin no ato wa, panikku ni naranai koto wo oboeru no yo.

After the tenth earthquake, you learn not to panic.

  41. CultureThe alert that automatically goes off on phones (and sometimes even interrupts TV broadcasts) is Japan's earthquake early warning system, "kinkyuu jishin sokuhou" (緊急地震速報) — it warns seconds before or during a quake, and it's something that basically only exists there in quite this form.
  42. Michiko

Keitai no araamu, kiita? Are wa kinkyuu jishin sokuhou yo.

Did you hear that alarm on your phone? That's the emergency alert.

  43. Sato

Nanika kanjiru mae ni, motto jikan ga aru to omotteta.

I thought I'd have more time before I felt anything.

  44. Michiko

Hotondo douji ni kuru koto mo areba, sukoshi mae ni kuru koto mo aru yo. Shingen no basho ni yoru no.

Sometimes it comes almost at the same time, sometimes a bit before. It depends on where the epicenter is.

  45. Michiko

Nyuusu wo mite miyou.

Let's check the news, just to make sure everything's okay around here.

  46. Narrator

Terebi ni wa, mou jishin no chizu ga utsutte ite, doko ga ichiban tsuyokatta ka misete imashita.

On TV, the earthquake map was already on screen, showing where it had been strongest.

  47. Sato

Yokatta, tsunami keihou wa detenai ne.

Good, there was no tsunami warning.

  48. Michiko

Sore to, genkan no doa wa mou kagi wo akete oita yo.

And look, I already unlocked the front door.

  49. CultureAfter a strong quake, it's common to unlock or open the front door — it's meant to guarantee an exit, in case the house's structure shifts a little and jams the door shut later.
  50. Sato

    Nande?

    Why?

  51. Michiko

Nen no tame yo. Yoshin ga kuru kamoshirenai kara.

Just as a precaution. You never know if an aftershock is coming.

  52. Sato

    Naruhodo ne.

    That makes sense.

  53. Michiko

Hora ne? Taishita koto nakatta deshou.

See? It wasn't a big deal.

  54. Narrator

Sono koro, machi no hantaigawa de wa, Rūkasu no keitai demo araamu ga narimashita.

Meanwhile, across town, the alarm also went off on Lucas's phone.

  55. Slang"Nani kore" (何これ) is a very casual way to say "what is this" — the natural reaction of someone caught off guard.
  56. Lucas

    Nan no oto?!

    What is that sound?!

  57. Lucas

    Nani kore...? Chanto yomenai.

Nani kore...? I can't read this properly.

  58. Narrator

Sukoshi matte, kaite aru koto wo rikai shiyou to shimashita.

He waited a bit, trying to understand what was written.

  59. Lucas

Mada shiranai kanji ga ippai aru...

    There's a bunch of kanji I still don't know...

  60. Narrator

Demo, yuka wa yuremasen deshita. Sukoshi mo.

But the floor didn't shake. Not even a little.

  61. Lucas

Nani mo kanjinakatta... tada no gohou datta no kana?

I didn't feel anything... maybe it was just a false alarm?

  62. Narrator

Keitai de nanika shirabeyou ka to omoimashita ga, totemo nemukatta desu.

He thought about looking something up on his phone, but he was really sleepy.

  63. Lucas

If I didn't feel anything, it must be fine around here.

  64. Narrator

Soshite araamu no oto wo keshite, mata nemurimashita.

And he turned off the alarm sound and went back to sleep.

  65. Narrator

Hoka ni nanika suru beki datta no ka, yoku wakaranai mama.

Not quite sure if he should have done something else.

  66. Narrator

Back to Monday, Sato finished telling the story.

  67. Sato

Sonna kanji de, ichijikan kurai, zutto dokidoki shiteta yo.

And that's how it went — an hour with my heart in my throat.

  68. Lucas

Nani mo nakute yokatta. Futari tomo buji de yokatta yo.

I'm glad it wasn't anything serious. Good thing you two are okay.

  69. Lucas

Nee, Satou no hanashi kara iroiro mananda ki ga suru.

You know, I think I learned a lot from your story.

  70. Sato

    Nani wo mananda no?

    Learned what?

  71. Grammar"To" (と), here, means "with" — checking と someone, talking と someone. It's the same particle that also becomes "and" when it links two things in a list, like "TV と phone."
  72. Lucas

Nani mo kanjinakatta kara tte, nani mo kakunin shinakute ii wake janai tte koto.

I learned that just because I didn't feel anything doesn't mean I shouldn't have checked.

  73. Lucas

Tsugi wa, minna to nyuusu wo kakunin suru yo.

Next time, I'll check the news together with you guys.

  74. Sato

Ii ne! Sore dake demo kanari tasukaru yo.

Nice! That already helps a lot.

  75. Lucas

Sore ni, Satou ga shita mitai ni, mazu hi wo kesu koto mo mananda yo.

And I also learned to turn off the fire first, just like you did.

  76. Sato

    Sou sou, yoku oboeteta ne.

That's right, good call remembering that.

  77. Lucas

I did get curious about one thing, though. What were you doing in the kitchen that had you so worried?

  78. Sato

Ah... right. There's something almost nobody here knows about me.

  79. Lucas

    Nani?

    What is it?

  80. Sato

I'm actually really serious about cooking. Like, I've been taking classes for a while.

  81. Lucas

Hontou ni?! Sonna koto ichido mo itte nakatta jan!

Really?! You never said anything about this!

  82. Sato

Shokuba ja, nakanaka hanasu kikai ga nakute.

It's just not the kind of thing that comes up at work, you know.

  83. Sato

And on Saturday, I was trying a really difficult recipe for the first time.

  84. Lucas

Sore wo shippai suru no ga kowakatta tte koto?

And that's what you were afraid of ruining?

  85. Sato

Sou nan da yo. Ano sawagi no naka demo, kokoro no dokoka de wa, sore ga buji ka dou ka dake ga ki ni natteta.

Exactly. In the middle of all that scare, part of me just wanted to know if it had survived.

  86. Lucas

Maji de?! Jishin no saichuu ni?!

Seriously?! In the middle of an earthquake?!

  87. Sato

Mou hotondo dekitetan da yo! Sugoku mottainai jan!

It was almost done! It would've been such a waste!

  88. Sato

Demo anshin shite, chanto buji datta yo. Shikamo, hitokire nokotterun da.

But don't worry, it survived. And there's even a piece left.

  89. Lucas

    Hontou ni?! Motte kita no?!

    Really?? Did you bring it?!

  90. Sato

Motte kita yo. Zenbu owatta ato ni tsukutta, maccha no keeki.

I did bring it. A matcha cake, made after everything settled down.

  91. Lucas

    Uwaa, kore, puro mitai!

    Wow, this looks professional!

  92. Lucas

Sugoku oishii! Ima made kiita naka de ichiban no shuumatsu no hanashi da yo.

It's amazing! Best weekend story I've ever heard.

  93. Sato

Hora ne? Kakureta sainou da yo.

    See? Hidden talent.

  94. Lucas

Kondo mata nanika tsukuru toki wa, boku mo yonde ne! Zenbu tabete mitai kara.

Next time you make something like this, call me! I want to try everything.

  95. Sato

Yakusoku. Demo, mata jishin no saichuu ni konaide yo.

Deal. But only if you don't show up in the middle of another earthquake.

  96. Narrator

Koushite, kowai yoru wa, motto oishii getsuyoubi no asa ni kawarimashita — soshite, dare mo yosou shinakatta Satou no ichimen wo miseta no deshita.

And that's how a scary night turned into a much sweeter Monday morning — and revealed a side of Sato nobody expected.
