Narrator
土曜日どようびの朝あさ、買かい物ものの日ひでした。
Doyoubi no asa, kaimono no hi deshita.
It was Saturday morning — grocery day.
Kenta
おばあちゃん、今日きょうはどうしても味噌みそおにぎりが食たべたい!
Obaachan, kyou wa doushitemo miso onigiri ga tabetai!
Grandma, today I really want a miso onigiri!
Fujiko
味噌みそおにぎりか…このあたりだとなかなか見みつからないね。
Miso onigiri ka... kono atari da to nakanaka mitsukaranai ne.
Miso onigiri... that's a hard one to find around here.
Kenta
そうなんだよね。お店みせに売うってないんだ。
Sou nan da yo ne. Omise ni utte nain da.
I know. The store doesn't sell that kind.
Fujiko
任まかせて。
Makasete.
Leave it to me.
Kenta
「任まかせて」ってどういうこと?
"Makasete" tte dou iu koto?
What do you mean, "leave it to me"?
Fujiko
そのうちわかるよ。
Sono uchi wakaru yo.
You'll see.
Narrator
そうして二人ふたりは出発しゅっぱつしました——ケンタはおばあちゃんがもうすべて手配てはいしていたなんて、知しる由よしもありませんでした。
Soushite futari wa shuppatsu shimashita — Kenta wa obaachan ga mou subete tehai shite ita nante, shiru yoshi mo arimasen deshita.
And off they went — Kenta with no idea his grandma already had it all arranged.

でも、あの味噌みそおにぎりって本当ほんとうに見みつからないんだよなぁ…
Demo, ano miso onigiri tte hontou ni mitsukaranain da naa...
But that kind of onigiri is so hard to find...
Fujiko
大丈夫だいじょうぶ、今日きょうはいつもと違ちがうから。
Daijoubu, kyou wa itsumo to chigau kara.
Trust me, today's going to be different.
Narrator
お店みせに入はいった瞬間しゅんかん、ケンタはもうどこに行いくか分わかっていました。
Omise ni haitta shunkan, Kenta wa mou doko ni iku ka wakatte imashita.
The moment they walked in, Kenta already knew where to go.
Kenta
おばあちゃん、これ見みて!
Obaachan, kore mite!
Grandma, look at this one!
Grammarだめ (dame) is a short, everyday way to turn down a request — more casual than a fully spelled-out "no," but not rude at all between family.
Fujiko
今日きょうはだめよ、ケンタ。
Kyou wa dame yo, Kenta.
Not today, Kenta.

なんで?

家いえにもうお菓子かしがあるからよ。
Ie ni mou okashi ga aru kara yo.
Because we already have candy at home.
Kenta
じゃあ、これは?

Fujiko
それもだめ。

Kenta
今日きょうはお菓子かし、全然ぜんぜんだめなの?

Kenta

野菜やさい売うり場ばで、おばあちゃんはゆっくりリストを進すすめていきました。
Yasai uriba de, obaachan wa yukkuri risuto o susumete ikimashita.
In the produce aisle, Fujiko worked through her list at an easy pace.
Grammar二つ (futatsu), 三つ (mittsu) — the generic counter for objects in general. Fruits and vegetables get away with this all-purpose counter, but some items have their own — which trips up even learners who've been at this a while.
Fujiko
玉たまねぎ、二ふたつ…
Tamanegi, futatsu...
We need two onions...
Kenta
玉たまねぎ二ふたつ、了解りょうかい!
Tamanegi futatsu, ryoukai!
Two onions, got it!
Fujiko
それから、りんごを三みっつ、赤あかくてきれいなの。
Sorekara, ringo o mittsu, akakute kirei na no.
And three apples, nice and red.
Kenta
いち、に、さん!
Ichi, ni, san!
One, two, three!
Fujiko
そう、それでいいよ。それからお米こめも一袋ひとふくろ。
Sou, sore de ii yo. Sorekara okome mo hitofukuro.
That's right. And a bag of rice.
Kenta
おばあちゃん、これ大おおきすぎるよ。
Obaachan, kore ookisugiru yo.
This one's too big, grandma.

じゃあ、隣となりにある小ちいさいのにして。
Jaa, tonari ni aru chiisai no ni shite.
Then grab the smaller one, right next to it.

最後さいごに寄よったのは、お肉にくとお魚さかなのコーナーでした。

Their last stop was the meat and fish counter.

Good afternoon. I'd like some sliced pork, please.
Grammar~くらい (kurai) softens a number into an approximation — "about/around" that amount. "三百グラムくらい" (sanbyaku guramu kurai) is "about three hundred grams," leaving a little wiggle room instead of demanding an exact number.

かしこまりました!何なんグラムにしましょうか?
Kashikomarimashita! Nan guramu ni shimashou ka?
Sure thing! How many grams would you like?

三百さんびゃくグラムくらいでお願ねがいできますか?
Sanbyaku guramu kurai de onegai dekimasu ka?
About three hundred grams, if that's alright.
Grammar100gで200円 (hyaku guramu de nihyaku en) — here で marks the unit the price is measured in: "for every 100g, 200 yen." It's the same で in 3個で500円 (three for 500 yen) — price per amount, not per single item.

Etto... hyaku guramu de nihyaku en ni narimasu.
Let's see... a hundred grams runs two hundred yen.

So three hundred grams comes to six hundred yen.

Ūn, sukoshi herasemasu ka? Nihyaku gojuu guramu kurai de.
Hmm, could you make it a bit less? Maybe two hundred fifty.

No problem! That'll be five hundred yen, then.
Vocabularyおまけ (omake) — that little freebie or sample a shop throws in, no charge, just a friendly gesture. Very common at neighborhood counters.

レジに向むかう途中とちゅう、ケンタはもう一度いちど試ためしてみました。
Reji ni mukau tochuu, Kenta wa mou ichido tameshite mimashita.
On the way to the front, Kenta tried his luck again.
Slangこれだけちょうだいよ (kore dake choudai yo) — だけ ("just/only") narrows it down to this one thing, and ちょうだいよ is the whiny, casual "gimme" a kid uses instead of the more polite ください. Together, it's exactly this "just gimme this one" bargaining move.
Kenta
おばあちゃん、この車くるま見みて!
Obaachan, kono kuruma mite!
Grandma, look at this car!
Fujiko
だめよ、ケンタ。
Dame yo, Kenta.
No, Kenta.
Kenta
これだけちょうだいよ。すごく小ちいさいし。

おもちゃに「小ちいさい」なんてないの。

There's no such thing as "tiny" when it comes to toys.

Cultureレジ袋 (rejibukuro) — since 2020, plastic bags have been charged separately at most Japanese supermarkets, which is why cashiers always ask before bagging.

All set. That'll be two thousand one hundred yen.
Vocabulary僕 (boku) is how boys and men often say "I" in casual speech — softer and more common among kids than 俺 (ore), and different from the neutral 私 (watashi) used by everyone else. That's why Kenta says "僕" instead of "私."

Hai, douzo.
Here you go.

On the walk home, Kenta was still thinking about the onigiri he never found.

そうとは言いってないよ。

Kotchi no michi ni ikou — konbini no mae o tooru kara.
Let's go this way — it passes by the konbini.
Kenta
そこにあるかな?

You think they'll have it?
Culture-くん (-kun) is a name suffix used for boys and younger men, casual and affectionate — that's why Yuki calls Kenta "Kenta-kun." -さん (-san) stays the neutral, polite default for basically everyone else, which is why the adults address each other that way throughout the episode.

Saa, dou ka na.

コンビニに入はいった瞬間しゅんかん、誰だれかがもう二人ふたりを待まっていました。
Konbini ni haitta shunkan, dareka ga mou futari o matte imashita.
The moment they stepped into the konbini, someone was already waiting for them.

Cultureお返し (okaeshi) — the custom of returning a gift or a favor you've received. It doesn't have to be expensive, just matched to the size of the gesture — exactly what Yuki's doing here.

今いままで食たべた中なかで一番いちばんおいしいお菓子かしだったの。これはおにぎりの形かたちをした「ありがとう」だよ。

It was one of the best sweets I've ever had. This is just a "thank you" in onigiri form.

Cultureソフトクリーム (sofuto kuriimu) — konbini soft serve is practically its own category in Japan. Some stores get lines just for it, and every chain insists theirs is the best.

こうして、「だめ」だらけの一日いちにちは、味噌みそおにぎりと無料むりょうのソフトクリームで締しめくくられたのでした。
Koushite, "dame" darake no ichinichi wa, miso onigiri to muryou no sofuto kuriimu de shimekukurareta no deshita.
And that's how a day full of "no" ended with a miso onigiri and a free scoop of ice cream.
