calangolingo teaches Japanese through short stories. Every episode published on the channel becomes a full lesson here: the whole transcript synced to the video, furigana over the kanji, romaji, translations in four languages, and the audio of each line on its own, to replay as many times as you need.
The idea behind the project fits in one sentence: a language is learned inside a story, not inside a list. A word memorised from a table is gone in a week; the same word spoken by a character in a scene you understood stays.
How the material is made
The episodes are written and produced by us — the script, the dialogue, the translations and the grammar notes. Nothing here is copied from a textbook or another site.
The character voices are synthesised (VOICEVOX and AivisSpeech). We say so plainly: it is high-quality Japanese speech synthesis, chosen so each character keeps a consistent voice across episodes — but they are not human actors.
The transcript, the furigana, the line-by-line split and the alignment with the video are reviewed by a human before a lesson goes live. If an error still gets through, tell us through the form — we fix it and republish the lesson.
What's on the site
- Episode lessons — the transcript synced to the video, with furigana, romaji, translation and the audio of every line.
- Vocabulary cards — each episode's words with reading, meaning and the line they appear in. They export to Anki.
- Kana game — hiragana and katakana drilling for anyone starting from zero.
- Optional account — signing in only makes your progress follow you from one device to another. Without an account the site works the same and your progress stays in your browser.
Everything is free. The site pays for itself with ads, which is why there is a privacy policy spelling out exactly what is collected.
